Identified as an ‘Institute of Eminence', the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras or IITM) was established in 1959 as a public technical and research university. It is the third IIT to be set up by the Government of India and is autonomous in nature. Located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras campus is home to India’s first university-based research park- IITMR. Indian Institute of Technology–Madras (IIT–Madras) is ranked 227 by the QS World University Rankings 2025, 3rd by the QS Asian University Rankings - Southern Asia category 2025, and 56 by the QS Asian University Rankings 2025.
